Investors have been reducing their exposure to equity funds since the start of the year, but demand for "star" fund managers has not cooled, with both Terry Smith and Neil Woodford taking top positions among the most-bought funds on the Interactive Investor platform in April.

It is the second time this year Smith, who runs Fundsmith Equity (one of our sister magazine Money Observer's Rated Funds), has taken the top spot.

Woodford's open-ended fund, CF Woodford Equity Income, was second in the popularity stakes. It has regularly held the top spot since launch in June 2014.

Outside of the top two, there were plenty of changes within the top 10, with two new names entering: Marlborough UK Micro Cap Growth and Newton Global Income, jumping from 15th and 16th place respectively last month. Both are Money Observer Rated funds.

Changes

The two funds that exited the top 10 were Invesco Perpetual High Income, managed by Mark Barnett, and HSBC FTSE All Share Index, a tracker fund.

In third place overall was Money Observer Rated Fund Artemis Global Income, a strong performer over the past five years, returning 66%. This is comfortably ahead of the average global sector fund return of 39%.

The other five funds that kept their place in the top 10 were Invesco Perpetual Income, HSBC FTSE 250 Index, Vanguard LifeStrategy 80% Equity, Axa Framlington Biotech and Lindsell Train Global Equity.

UK equity funds dominated the remainder of the top 20, including Rated Funds Threadneedle UK Equity Income and MFM Slater Growth.
